Daniel Miller fait partie de ces photographes flâneurs qui
perpétuent cette importante école photographique qui a
donné, au fil des ans, de nombreuses images aujourd’hui
incontournables.
Avec son approche subjective de la rue, il ne cherche
pas à documenter des événements particuliers comme
une manifestation ou un accident quelconque. Ce qui
l’intéresse, c’est de donner libre cours à son imaginaire ainsi
qu’aux émotions que lui procurent ces rencontres furtives
avec d’autres personnages. C’est ce que Robert Doisneau
décrivait très justement comme «le théâtre de la rue».
Les images en noir et blanc de Miller sont un mélange
subtil de spleen, de solitude et de gravité qui sied bien à sa
personnalité. Je pense en particulier à ce monsieur tirant un
sac de voyage avec, en arrière-plan, une murale montrant
un train à vapeur ou à ce couple d’amoureux sur les bords
de la Seine à Paris.

Daniel Miller is one of those wandering photographers who
perpetuate this important school of imagery that has given
us over the years many of the now essential images of this
art form.
With his subjective approach to street photography, he
does not attempt to document specific events such as a
demonstration or an accident. What interests him is to give
free rein to his imagination and the emotions which result
from his furtive encounters with those other characters
from the streets. This is what Robert Doisneau rightly
described as «street theater».
Miller’s black and white images are a subtle mix of
melancholy, loneliness and seriousness that reflect well his
personality. For me, what first comes to mind is that image
of one gentleman pulling a suitcase, and behind him is a wall
showing a steam train. And then, there is that pair of lovers
on the banks of the Seine in Paris...
